2、 informationI HA VE SEEN HOW THE FOUNDA TIONS OF THE WORLD ARE LAID,AND I HA VE NOT THE LEAST DOUBT THA T IT WILL ST AND A GOOD WHILE.HENRY DA VID THOREAU The Rolling Ridge Rd.park site is in a built-out suburban area lacking in park acreage.The sites prior floodplain sta-tus forestalled development

3、 for decades.After this status changed,the site was quickly acquired,cleared of a uniform growth of young pine,and filled to keep it from reverting to floodplain in the next analysis.A clean slate indeed.The 13.3-acre park site serves an ap-proximately seven-square mile service area within Gwinnett

4、County,Georgia.The only design criteria was to have 100 parking spaces and a small restroom facility,the rest was open to our own imagination.Using this criteria,our group was able to develop a usable and aesthetically pleasing plan with a covered parking structure,green roof,boardwalk vistas,and sm

7、f a previously unoccupied piece of land that had been vacant for quite some time.The site is located in Ath-ens,GA just off Oglethorpe Avenue near downtown Athens and GA-Loop 10.The design criteria included creating a minimum of eight home sites with a shared center green space.This was accomplished

8、 by incorporating 8 subur-ban infill style homes with shared drive-ways and garages to cut down on cost and space.In addition,a large central lawn with a gate,and a community pool were added to bring a sense of commu-nity to the site.The use of infill housing projects such as these will go a long wa

9、y in the con-servation of land in crowed suburban areas and at the same time create its own sense of community.PLAN/LA YOUToglethorpe ave.housing03breezewayThe objective for this project was to apply knowledge of landscape architec-ture and sustainabe systems to local projects by engaging with commu

10、nity partners,in this case,the UGA Physi-cal Plant.The site is located on the Uni-versity of Georgia campus next to the school of environment and design and needed a new landscape plan as well as a plan for future installation of a rain water harvesting system for irrigation.The team then focused on

11、 how to col-lect the water from the site,what would be used to store it,and what plants would be installed.By working directly with the campus physical plant and local community per-sonnel,we were able to come with a sustainable design and implementation plan for the university that will be used at

12、a later time.conceptecology service learning projectphotoscisternfinal plan04mixed-useChase Street Plaza is a mixed-use resi-dential/commercial community in the heart of Athens,GA just north of down-town and sits adjacent to an abandoned rail line.The design criteria involved establishing direct acc

13、ess to the old rail line to pro-vide transportation to and from Atlanta,creating a large residential community for the surrounding area,and providing a sufficient amount of shops and stores for public use.The design includes:-Large multi-story apartment buildings with privacy gates and first level p

14、ark-ing-Preservation of existing water tower structures to preserve the old mill feel-Creation of a new rail station with an adjacent avenue of shops complete with a grocery store and parking deckmaster planplacement studychase st.station plazafigure groundThe Plaza Avenue is the underlying feature

15、of the entire site.By connect-ing the old Athens rail line to Atlanta,and other cities in the area,the town of Athens is revi-talized with an influx of new patrons.The area is dominated by the placement of lo-cally owned businesses with a main street type feel as you walk from end to end.Its proximi

16、ty to the apartment build-ings help to increase the sense of community while at the same time,providing easy access to site amenities and shops.section elevation05coverdellThe growing importance and demand for public green space can easily be seen at the University of Georgia.The charge given was to

17、 help design a large area of campus into a student park that could be used between classes or just for leisure time.Four large Japanese maples anchor the center of the design along with a vari-ety of small native plantings.The site is dominated by four terraced stone walls that allow students and vi

18、sitors to feel as if they are in four complete-ly different areas of the site while at the same time,creating a unique stroll through a relatively quiet part of cam-pus.The expansion of public and student green space on campus will be aided further by designs such as these.surface studyconceptperspe

19、ctive viewsstudent greenspacesketch-up model06northside parkBuilding on the foundations that I have established over the past three years,the next challenge was a small three-acre plot of land just south of down-town Atlanta.The Northside Park concept and final design was built off of an earlier pla

20、n developed in the 1960s.The Park had fallen into disrepair and needed new life.Developing a site program that included a small restroom facility,eight parking spaces,a playground,and existing ten-nis and basketball courts,I developed a unique overall plan from two different concepts.As shown,the ma

21、in design feature is the large concentric ovals circling the park.On the south end of the site sits an elevated walking bridge with tall na-tive grasses.A pavilion and cooking grills were added near the basketball court for local residents to enjoy,as well as two main fountains with one be-ing fully
